YURN and Nnic drop collaborative rework of 'Looking For Love'
Nnic is a Lockdown Sessions alum, and YURN is the moniker of James Smith, formerly of Gypsies on The Autobahn.
Irish singer songwriter Nnic and multi instrumentalist/producer YURN have released their exciting new collaboration, a cover of Everything But The Girl's, “I didn't know I was Looking For Love.”
When Ireland's second lockdown hit, Nnic and Yurn began discussing the idea of a cover. Taking inspiration from the Karen Ramirez version of 'Looking For Love', Yurn developed an energetic, swinging percussion and coupled it with delicate guitar and an addictive bass line.
Nnic’s smooth vocals stay true to the 90s original, and the track builds with ethereal synths and low harmonies. But the experimentiation didn't stop there – Yurn also by incorporated rhythmic domestic sounds, like a noisy radiator turning on and a shower curtain pulling closed.
"This cover breathes modern vibrance into 90s deep house dance floor energy," Nnic says. "The intention was to create something energetic, that would also remind listeners of fun nights out."
Of his process, YURN explains: "Listening to the song, nostalgia rising, there were some elements I wanted to hold onto. Taking inspiration from old albums by The xx, I plugged my guitar in and cranked up the amp to get some real crunch for building the track. I’m lucky being so remote I can make a lot of noise. Hearing Nnic’s vocal staying true to the soft performance Karen Ramirez gave way back when, it all seemed to fit."
