Rua Red presents Santiago Serra performance titled ISRAELI STATE CRIMES IN PALESTINE SINCE 14 MAY 1948

Dublin multi-disciplinary arts centre Rua Red is currently presenting Santiago Serra's latest performance, ISRAELI STATE CRIMES IN PALESTINE SINCE 14 MAY 1948 in London.

The performance, which began yesterday evening, takes the form of a continuous reading of Palestinians killed by the Israeli state, its forces and settlers since the establishment of the state of Israel on May 14, 1948.

Where a name has not been recorded, the reader speaks the Arabic word مجهول (Majhul), meaning 'unknown', followed by the location of the death.

The reading is currently taking place at the home of the art nonprofit which produced and curated the performance, A/POLITICAL, in London. The free viewing remains open daily from 9:30 am to 9:30 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday, with a livestream available 24 hours a day. It will run until the list is complete.

The livestream is also accessible at the Irish Museum of Modern Art's Lecture Room in Dublin during opening hours.

Co-curated with Maricel Álvarez, the project is in partnership with a research institution based in Palestine, who have requested to remain anonymous.

The names have been compiled from established sources including the Gaza Ministry of Health lists via Iraq Body Count, B'Tselem, the Palestinian Information Centre via WAFA: The Palestinian News and Information Agency, The Shireen Observatory and the Jerusalem Legal Aid and Human Rights Centre, alongside ongoing research from historical monographs and scholarly publications.

In a description on their website, Rua Red affirmed that "this should not be understood as a final or complete account, but as part of an ongoing process of gathering and checking names and records in order to honour as many victims as possible."

An outline of the methodology used, parameters of the research and a full source list will be released at the launch of the performance. The list read will be made available at its conclusion.

Rua Red, based in Tallaght, regularly exhibits work from prominent Irish and international artists, often focusing on social and political frameworks. This weekend, they will host the Intercultural Arts Festival - FORUM which features multidisciplinary events, workshops and performances.

Santiago Serra is a Spanish conceptual and performance artist known for his politically charged pieces that explore capitalism, labor exploitation and social inequality. His past works include paying laborers to continuously shift heavy concrete blocks back and forth for the duration of a standard workday, paying a group of men to stand in a line ordered by the darkness of their skin and a performance piece where an individual was paid to receive a 30 cm tattoo on their body.
