Howard Marks - Mr. Smiley
When international cannabis trafficker Howard Marks was miraculously released early from a 25-year stretch in one of America’s toughest nicks, the relieved Welshman made a promise to himself to go straight. His plan was to quit smuggling and retire to a quiet law-abiding life with his family in the Balearic Islands.
Needless to say, with the Balearics being at the very centre of the vortex for the ‘E generation’, that promise didn’t last. It wasn’t long before Howard found himself trying pure ecstasy and rubbing shoulders with the kingpins of the pill trade, including some of Britain’s most notorious gangsters. Inevitably, he decided to get in on the action... with truly messy results.
This funny, moving and fast-paced book is subtitled My Last Pill and Testament, a reference to the sad fact that Howard has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. At least he can console himself that he didn’t waste his years.
