Druid announce Synge, Shakespeare and Beckett productions for their 50th-anniversary

The Druid Theatre Company have announced productions in Galway, Dublin, and New York this year to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Their upcoming season will feature a double bill of J.M. Synge’s Riders to the Sea and Shakespeare’s Macbeth in Galway this July, as part of Galway International Arts Festival (GIAF).

Macbeth will then be transferred to the Gaiety Theatre for Dublin Theatre Festival in September and October.

The company will also transfer their acclaimed 2024 production of Samuel Beckett’s Endgame to Manhattan's Irish Arts Center in October and November.

All the productions are directed by Druid co-founder and artistic director Garry Hynes and feature fellow co-founder and actress Marie Mullen.

"It’s not lost on me how lucky we all are at Druid to have made it to this milestone," said Hynes.

"There are so many people to thank for helping us along the way but I’d like to especially thank the people of Galway for their belief in us since day one, as well as our audiences far and wide – because it’s not theatre until someone’s watching," she added.

Druid is a Galway-based theatre company created in 1975 by Garry Hynes, Marie Mullen, and Mick Lally. Upon its founding, it became Ireland's first professional theatre company based outside Dublin.

For their production of Martin McDonagh's The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Druid won four accolades at the 52nd Tony Awards in 1998, including Best Actress for Marie Mullen and Best Director for Garry Hynes, which made Hynes the first woman to receive the honour.
