New documentary examines online bullying and Ms. Velásquez's efforts to stop it
25-year-old Lizzie Velásquez has been called the world's ugliest woman and been subjected to more severe harassment at the hands of faceless internet commenters than anyone should. Velásquez is not one to wallow in her misery though. She has turned to writing and motivational speaking as means of getting her message against bullying out, and now her efforts and mission are the subject of new documentary A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velásquez Story.
Velásquez's appearance is the result of an extremely rare congenital disease that prevents her from accumulating any body fat, but she has said she views her illness as a blessing. The attention she has been able to draw to her fight against bullying in all its forms has been unquestionably positive and she shows no signs of slowing down, with her lobbying for a Federal Anti-Bullying Bill in the United States.
