Undertones play to debut in Derry
Re-Energize runs as part of the City Of Culture celebrations.
The play inspired by The Undertones, Re-Energize, debuts from May 13 – 18 at The Playhouse Theatre as part of Derry’s City of Culture celebrations. Tickets are £10/£14.
Written by Northern Ireland playwright Gary Mitchell, it tells the story of an also-ran ‘70s punk band who reunite for a possibly ill-advised last hurrah.
“Re-Energize reunites these men, now aged in their fifties and with various broken marriages, depressions, and drug debts to paramilitaries behind them,” reads the blurb. “They come together again to do one last gig to prove to themselves, their communities, each other, and their annoying teenage children that they could have been somebody.”
It’s the sequel to a previous Mitchell delve into punk’s past, Energy, and features an original score from ‘tones John and Damian O’Neill.
Derry conquered, Re-Energize will take up residence from September 9 – 23 in Belfast’s Lyric Theatre.
