Fans can get a close-up look at The Edge’s 1975 Gibson Les Paul from April 3 to 6 when it goes on display in Dublin’s Clarence Hotel.
If you’ve a minimum of $60,000 you can then bid for the guitar on April 21 when it’s auctioned online at www.juliensauctions.com for Music Rising.
This is the charity set up in 2005 by The Edge, producer Bob Ezrin and Gibson chairman Henry Juszkiewicz to benefit the Louisianan musicians adversely affected by Hurricane Katrina.
“I wanted to give something really significant that would mean a lot for me to give,” says the U2 man. “It deserved something that I would miss.”
As for why he’s such a big Gibson fan, The Edge explains: “I wanted that Steve Jones Never Mind The Bollocks sound. I got the same guitar right down to the colour. I never could get that sound, but I found a bunch of songs in this instrument and have used it ever since on tour and in the studio.”
Also under the hammer are a signed Bill Clinton saxophone (reserve $2,000), Larry Mullen’s tom drum ($8,000), Bono’s Irish Falcon guitar ($80,000), handwritten Bruce Springsteen lyrics ($2,000) and an early Elvis Presley ($3,000).
