Scullion, one of the most popular and influential bands of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s in Ireland, have announced three re-union concerts, which will take place in Cork.
The group are celebrating their 30th birthday this year and the gigs, lined up for the Triskel Arts Centre – also celebrating its 30th anniversary – will mark the occasion in style.
The dates, run in association with the Cork Mid Summer Festival, are confirmed for June 26, 27 and 28.
The band will be joined by an array of guests over the three nights, to create what promises to be a true celebration of a great force in Irish music.
“Three decades on from their formative gigs together, the bands sound is as strong as ever, maturing like a good wine, gaining depth and clarity,” a Triskel spokesperson told Hot Press. “The voices of Sonny Condell and Philip King have taken on a seamless harmony, pinioned by the bravura guitar playing of Robbie Overson, who has ably filled the role of founding member Greg Boland.”
Scullion have remained loyal to the band’s original vision, recasting folk and traditional songs with contemporary splashes of jazz and blues colour. It’s a recipe that yielded four seminal albums, and an impressive catalogue of songwriting landmarks, including like ‘Eyelids Into Snow’, ‘Down in The City’ and ‘John The Baptist’, that still form the backbone of their set today. They also recorded the interpretation of ‘I Am Stretched On Your Grave’ that inspired Sinead O’Connor’s acclaimed cover.
Tickets will be on sale at the Triskel box office.
