Confirmation of the severity of the guitarist's illness a week after his retirement was announced.
In a statement last week, AC/DC both confirmed Malcolm Young's retirement from music and announced their first ever album without the founding member.
Since then, rumours have been circulating as to the exact nature of the 61-year-old's illness and today the family have confirmed that he is suffering from dementia.
His wife, Linda, is thought to have moved him into a full-time Sydney care home, emphasising the severity of his condition.
AC/DC will release their first album in six years, Rock Or Bust, on November 28.
Stevie Young, the nephew of Angus and Malcolm, takes Malcolm's place on guitar for the album and for the 2015 world tour.
Malcolm Young founded AC/DC with his younger brother Angus in 1973 and went on to become revered as one of the best rhythm guitarists in rock.
In January, Angus told Guitar World that his brother's playing is "really underrated" and leaves him "completely awestruck", going on to say that if Malcolm sat down to play a solo, he would play it better than Angus himself.
The end of an era.
