The Police to play Stormont Castle

Having played to 80,000 people last year in Croke Park, The Police have confirmed that they’re returning to Ireland for a June 20 show in the grounds of Belfast’s Stormont Castle.

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 07 Mar 2008

Welcoming the news, departing Northern Ireland First Minister the Rev. Ian Paisley enthuses: "This is a fantastic coup for Northern Ireland. An event of this magnitude has a sizeable benefit for the economy, not least our tourism industry. The beautiful grounds of the Stormont Estate are a fantastic venue for this event and it is fitting that they should be used by the public in this way."

Those sentiments are echoed by the other half of the Chuckle Broth…, sorry, Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness: "This concert will send a message to the world that not only is the North open for business but that it’s also a vibrant and exciting place to be.

"It’s hoped that we will be able to accommodate some 35,000 fans at Stormont for the concert. I look forward to attending what I’m sure will be an enjoyable show."

First mooted as a venue for major gigs by the late and endearingly rock ‘n’ roll Mo Mowlam, Stormont has previously hosted gigs by the likes of Elton John, Rod Stewart and The Eagles.

Tickets priced £70 go on sale soon.
