The Donegal-born star has collected four Grammys in the past. Could the fifth be on its way, for last year's iconic return to action?
Enya’s Dark Sky Island has been nominated for a Grammy, as Best New Age album,
The album, released in November 2015, was Enya’s eighth studio outing and confirmed that her beguiling talents are continuing to be embraced by fans all across the world. In the UK, Dark Sky Island became Enya’s highest charting studio album since 1991’s Shepherd Moons, debuting at #4 and achieving Gold status in just three weeks. Its success was replicated globally, with Top 10 chart positions in key territories including Germany, the USA, Australia and Ireland. Enya was featured on the cover of the Hot Press Annual last year, and the album was hailed as a triumph.
Now, a year on, Dark Sky Island has been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album. The nomination is the latest reward for the Enya creative triumvirate, which is completed by producer Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan, and could see them earn their fifth Grammy Award having previously triumphed with the Best New Age Album accolade for Shepherd Moons (1992), The Memory of Trees (1996), A Day Without Rain (2001) and Amarantine (2006).
“I’m delighted with the Grammy nomination,” says Enya. “Dark Sky Island is very special to Nicky, Roma and myself. It is such an honour to get this superb recognition for our efforts – the Grammys are after all, the Oscars of the music business.”
Also competing for Best New Age album are: Orogenby John Burke; Inner Passion by Peter Kater & Tina Guo; Rosetta by Vangelis; and White Sun II by White Sun. The winner will be revealed at The 59th Annual Grammy Awards, which will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 12th.
Dark Sky Island heralded a new chapter in the career of a hugely successful artist who has already sold over 75 million albums and has earned four Grammy Awards, six WorldMusic Awards and an Ivor Novello, as well as an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe nomination.
