Good Evening New York City

Great songs played well, but...

Patrick Freyne, 14 Dec 2009

Pop aristocrat Paul McCartney has written some of the best songs ever. That is a fact: musical scientists have established it with test tubes and Hadron colliders and stuff. Here we get to hear two discs worth of these songs (and watch one DVD of the whole lot) accompanied by the sounds (and sights) of Paul McCartney being adored by tens of thousands. Whilst this, on one level, suggests ‘vanity project designed to milk the fans’, Maccaccca is one of the few people walking the earth whose prodigious vanity and self-regard is actually backed up with actual ability – so I can forgive him. The Pauline pipes are in fine form and the songs are, of course, still great, but they do get blended together in a smooth professional-band-playing-the-classics kind of way and I imagine that whilst it would have been great to be there, once you’ve bought it you probably won’t listen to it as much as the originals.
