Two heads aren’t necessarily better than on! Fire Songs isn’t a terrible album, it’s just a little too sweet and safe for this writer’s ears.
Two heads aren’t necessarily better than one
If pretty young ladies singing songs about wicked old men get you all excited, chances are Fire Songs by Jenny Lewis’ erstwhile backing singers The Watson Twins is the record for you. From the supposedly soulful sounds of the cringe-worthy cover of The Cure’s ‘Just Like Heaven’ to the meandering, MOR stylings of ‘Dig A Little Deeper,’ everything about this release screams “dad rock.”
Fire Songs isn’t a terrible album, it’s just a little too sweet and safe for this writer’s ears. Opening track ‘How Am I To Be’ is as close to excitement as we get on this opus and is full of some pretty snazzy Dusty Springfield-isms, but by and large The Watson Twins will only ever be seen as pretenders to Katie Melua’s throne – and that, dear readers, is a very frightening thought indeed.
