There’s lots upcoming to interest and intrigue fans of the great guitar maestro, with an exhibition in at the City Library, a live gig with guitar virtuoso Jacques Stotzem, and another gem on vinyl...
Rory Gallagher’s posthumous album, Wheels Within Wheels, is being released on vinyl by Universal Music.
This will be the first time ever on vinyl for what is a fantastic collection of acoustic lost recordings and outtakes, recorded by Rory Gallagher. Originally released on CD in 2003, and widely acclaimed by critics and fans alike, the album showcases the guitarist’s extraordinary versatility across the blues and folk genres; it also highlights Rory’s dexterity in the flamenco, skiffle and traditional Irish music styles. Among the fellow players who make guest appearances on the album alongside Rory are music legends Lonnie Donegan, Martin Carthy, Bert Jansch, Juan Martin and The Dubliners.
Compiled by Rory’s brother and archivist Dónal Gallagher, the 14-track collection comes pressed onto 180 gram vinyl, complete with a download code. Previous Rory vinyl releases have performed superbly, colonising the UK jazz and blues charts earlier this year, and selling extremely well.
This week also sees the opening of an exhibition, entitled Remembering Rory, in Cork. The exhibition marks the 40th anniversary of the Rory Gallagher Music Library. This year is also the 70th anniversary of Rory’s birth in 1948.

Remembering Rory opens at 7:00pm on Thursday 5 July, at the City Library, Grand Parade, Cork, with a concert of Rory Gallagher songs, featuring Belgian acoustic guitarist, Jacques Stotzem. Stotzem, a renowned guitar virtuoso, will perform a selection of Rory’s songs on the night of the opening. In a show he has named To Rory, Stotzem recalls his guitar hero’s dynamic playing and his “unmatched musicality” by presenting the music on solo acoustic guitar.
Memorabilia from the family collection of the internationally renowned Cork rocker will be on display until 31 August.
