With the worldwide critical acclaim it has garnered, Lenny Abrahamson's Room has now reached the €1 million box office figure in Ireland.
The film has also been expanded to over 60 cinemas in Ireland and there's no doubt it will continue it's box-office success as the Oscar's have yet to air. Room has been nominated for 4 Academy Awards; Best Picture, Best Director (Lenny Abrahamson), Best Actress (Brie Larson) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Emma Donoghue). The support Room has received amongst Irish cinemagoers has shown itself as Room managed to surpass Hollywood blockbusters such as Bridge of Spies, The Hateful Eight and Joy.
With pressure on filmmakers to make big numbers at the box office, this is a huge achievement for all involved. Room started out with a budget of around $6 million and no expectations of the success that awaited it. Overseas in the US, since the film's aforementioned accolades, Room has doubled in it's box-office figures and has to date, accumulated over $11 million.
In the latest issue of Hot Press, we spoke to producer Ed Guiney on the unforeseen universal impact of Room. "How a parent protects their child creates a world for them - and then in a sense saves the child, and then the child saves the mother. It's a very life-affirming film."
If you haven't yet seen Room, get yourself down to your nearest cinema to witness what all the fuss is about!
