An attack on the launch party for A Moon Shaped Pool lead to protests – and an aggressive response from the police
Radiohead, widely regarded as one of the most important creative forces in rock over the past two decades, were at the centre of a disturbing controversy in Turkey this weekend, following the band’s global launch party for their new album A Moon Shaped Pool, which took place on Friday.
Fans of the band were attacked by individuals, who were apparently offended by the fact that people were listening to music and drinking during the Muslim holy month, Ramadan. The Radiohead listening party took place at the Velvet Indieground record shop in Istanbul. The attackers entered the premises while the listening party was in progress and proceeded to beat Radiohead fans with metal pipes.
Video footage of the attack was streamed live on the smartphone app Periscope and was subsequently shared on social media.
The attack sparked protests on Saturday, at which clashes occurred between police and protestors. In what seems to have been a disproportionately violent response, the police then used tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

The Istanbul party was one of dozens that took place across most major markets, including Ireland, to mark the launch of A Moon Shaped Pool. The Dublin event took place at Tower Records.
“Our hearts go out to those attacked,” Radiohead said in a statement. "We hope that someday we will be able to look back on such acts of violent intolerance as things of the ancient past. For now, we can only offer our fans in Istanbul our love and support."
