Last night saw Future Islands play the first of their back-to-back shows in a rammed Vicar St. and what a night it was too with Samuel T. Herring in hyperactive young Marlon Brando meets funky James Brown mode throughout.
Maybe it’s just the Everton obsessive in me, but the singer also bears a striking resemblance to Roberto Martinez who’ll be wondering why his own men can’t play with that sort of intensity for 90 minutes.
When not sideways moonwalking and singing up a storm - we particularly enjoyed his Hellhammer-seque death metal grunts - Sam reminisced about previous Dublin gigs in Andrew’s Lane Theatre, Upstairs @ Whelan’s, downstairs at Whelan’s and The Workman’s Club which weren’t quite so healthily attended, and namechecked Aiken booker Leagues O’Toole for having the faith to keep bringing ‘em back.
We won’t indulge in any Spoiler-ing, suffice it to say we’ve another Gig of the Year contender on our hands.
