Destiny's Child
Witnessing the Texas trio in full flow one thing becomes crystal clear-they punch well below their weight in musical terms
Third time in The Point in less than two years for Beyonce, Kelly and Michelle, the continuing success of Destiny’s Child is built on much more than a string of catchy singles.
Witnessing the Texas trio in full flow one thing becomes crystal clear-they punch well below their weight in musical terms. A Gospel set mid-show demonstrated their instinctively soulful vocal abilities while sassy declarations of single-mindedness such as ‘Independent Woman’ and ‘Survivor’ are far more direct statements of girl-power than anything Posh, Sporty and the two Mel’s ever managed to conjure up.
The largely female crowd is surprisingly older than you might expect, the average age of late teens/early 20s a testament no doubt to the sophistication of the trio’s infectious brand of dance pop. Other big hits, ‘Say My Name’, ‘Bootylicious’ and the recent single, their version of The Bee Gees ‘Emotion’ are met with howls of recognition while there’s a nod to the original of the species with a quick run through Tina Turner’s version of the Creedence Clearwater classic, ‘Proud Mary’.
Costume changes, impressively choreographed dance routines and some pretty amazing video and lighting effects made this a thoroughly satisfying night.
