The Boomtown Rats frontman says, together, England and Scotland "invented the modern world."
Bob Geldof has urged Scotland not to become an independent country. In an interview with The Daily Record to promote The Boomtown Rats show in Glasgow next month, the Dubliner declared himself to be a massive fan of the "remarkable political notion" that is the UK.
"You two guys invented the modern world. Why go back from that?" Geldof said of England and Scotland's union.
“Remember I’m Irish but it was the UK which gave me my life. The people inside this political notion are truly extraordinary.
"The English are an amazing people. Their history is just fucking amazing. But it took the Scottish nation’s genius – and literally that is the word – to invent the modern world. That’s the truth of it."
Geldof went on to say that "nationalism is a very dangerous political animal" and called for increased co-operation and interdependence.
The musician and humanitarian joins the celebrity likes of David Bowie and JK Rowling who support the Better Together campaign.
On September 18, Scottish voters will be asked "Should Scotland be an independent country?"
