Babyshambles' bassist on near-death experience
Bassist Drew McConnell opens up to Hot Press about how his brush with death has made him healthier than ever...
After a driver (running a red light) knocked Drew off his bicycle in London two years ago, the Irish bassist endured horrific injuries which included his spine being crushed to pieces. But, as he tells Hot Press, he refuses to let his brush with death bring him down, physically or mentally.
“Humans are designed to deal with trauma of a physical and emotional kind. It’s the stuff of life”.
Now healthy and sober after an impressive recovery, Drew feels the “healthiest he’s been for years” and tells us why staying off the drink has even strengthened his relationship with the band’s founder Pete Doherty.
“I think he appreciates having a best mate who’s sober and keeping his eye on the ball and I sure as hell appreciate having a best mate who happens to be a fucking musical genius."
