Unsubstantial, inconsequential but great fun all the same
Hard to believe that it’s seven long years since Weezer first exploded onto the scene with their endearing post-grunge, power/pop hit, ‘Buddy Holly’. Frontman and main songwriter, the unlikely monikered Rivers Cuomo not only proving to be a dependable tunesmith but managing to raise geekiness to new levels of popularity.
Five years on from their last album, the critically acclaimed but commercially disappointing Pinkerton and Weezer return to an American rock landscape dominated by the dumbed-down, cartoon-rock antics of Limp Bizkit, Blink 182 and sundry other teenage dirtbags.
Thankfully they haven’t changed their colours all that much during the long lay-off and this Ric Ocasek-produced third instalment kicks off with a trio of instantly memorable buzz-saw guitar/pop gems in ‘Don’t Let Go’, ‘Photograph’ and the recent single ‘Hash Pipe’.
