McEvoy's new single sums up nation's mood

Eleanor McEvoy’s new single ‘Shibboleth’ expresses the singer’s acute disappointment at the current state of the nation

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 26 Nov 2010

Speaking exclusively to Hot Press, McEvoy said, "I wrote ‘Shibboleth’ in loving sadness of what they've done to my beautiful country... It seems to have grown in relevance in the intervening months."

"Although it's a contemporary song, I used a technique that you find in a lot of old traditional Irish songs where because of political conflict, you weren't allowed to sing about Ireland so they used a woman as a metaphor for Ireland. I'm doing the same thing in 'Shibboleth'. I'm singing as if Ireland’s a person.”

McEvoy’s feelings are obvious in the final verse:
"The rains that you're so famous for/I've only realised/Are just the tears you fail to keep/Cascading from your eyes."

The track is taken from McEvoy's current album I’d Rather Go Blonde.
