The pop world is mourning one of its larger than life characters.
The very sad news has broken that Dead Or Alive mainman, Pete Burns, has died in the UK from a massive cardiac arrest.
Going on to become a huge reality TV star courtesy of his participation in Celebrity Big Brother, Burns and his band scored a number one hit in 1985 with ‘You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)’.
The 57-year-old was also known for his machine gun wit and penchant for cosmetic surgery.
Part of the same Liverpool scene that spawned Echo & The Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, Wah! Heat and Frankie Goes To Hollywood, he was a wildly entertaining interviewee and a man who never shied away from confrontation.
“When you’re walking round a tough working-class city with characters like Pete Burns and Holly Johnson, you soon learn how to leave Linford Christie standing in the 200 metres!” Lightning Seed Ian Broudie told us a while back. “Liverpool was the same as London at the time – if you were a punk or dared wear anything other than flared trousers, you were setting yourself up as a target for the local headcases.”
"Tearful about the passing of Pete Burns," tweets Boy George. "He was one of our great true eccentrics and such a big part of my life! Wow. Hard to believe!"
“Absolute shock at the news of Pete Burns’ death, only just saw him,” messages George's pal Marilyn. “My sincerest best wishes to his family, friends and fans.”
Adds politician and fellow former housemate George Galloway: “Sad to hear of the demise of Pete Burns. He was a cross between Oscar Wilde and Dorothy Parker. You don't get more brilliant than that. RIP.”
'80s superfan Nigel Moran has posted these great photos of Pete with Marilyn and George.
