The Noel Hogan-curated musical project is part of Limerick's City Of Culture celebrations.
The Blind Pig is the venue today for the launch of The Pigtown Fling, a Limerick City of Culture musical project curated by the Cranberries’ Noel Hogan.
Mike Gavin, Ursula De Campos, Sanchez, God Knows, Eamon Hehir, Boris Hunka, Rob Hope, Ray Murphy, Tony Roche, Ben Wanders, James Hanley, Brian Mulcahy, Steve Ryan, Damien Drea, Siobhan O’Brien and Aoife McLoughlin are just a (large) handful of the other local musicians appearing on the CD, which gets the launch treatment on September 20 in the Crescent Hall with Paul McLoone and Pat Shortt taking care of compere duties.
Five hundred free tickets are being allocated to people buying the collection here.
All proceeds from the 17-track collection go to Corbett Suicide Prevention Patrol and the Learning Hub locally.
Speaking at the launch, project director Dr. John Greenwood stated: “The watchwords of The Pigtown Fling are: ‘Made in Limerick’. The Pigtown Fling amply demonstrates just how vibrant the Limerick music industry is at the moment. While we have benefited from the expertise of Limerick citizens in places as far apart as London and Los Angeles, all of the creative work was undertaken in Limerick City over the last year. We need now to build a viable and long-term music industry in Limerick.”
Adds Noel Hogan: “The challenges – and ultimately the strengths – of making this record involved bringing together a very diverse range of musicians, performers and songwriters. Many of whom while they might have been on nodding-terms on the streets of Limerick had not played together before. The end result is an incredible fusion of genres, sounds and talents.”
We'll have more on this fantastic initiative in the next issue of Hot Press.
