The legendary Manchester outfit's last trip to the capital was a jam-packed show in the Olympia Theatre.
Their return tonight is to a rainy racecourse in south Dublin as part of the Bulmers Light Festival. But the wet weather didn't deter the 24 hour party people: dysfunctional uncles were conspicuous by their absence! Nor did it dampen the spirit of the band: introduced by Bez and going for it in fine style, they kicked off superbly with 'Loose Fit'. Later, punters were treated to a glimpse of Bez-the-mover, who came out of his semi-retirement to join the band, for some, ahem, freaky dancing during 'Kinky Afro' and 'Step On' in particular.
Overall, the Mondays treated the crowds to a rollicking rundown of their greatest hits, with one or two slightly lower-key groovers (such as 'Mad Cyril') thrown in for good measure.
It was a case of umbrellas – rather than hands – in the air in this short but very satisfying set. But no one cared.
The encore of 'W.F.L.' sent the wet punters home happier than any dry night in town.
Brilliant stuff from Ryder & co. Hats off...
