Rrakala
Award winning singer makes another arresting album.
Having charmed the likes of celebrity big leaguers such as Sting, Elton John and Bjork – and world music fans in general to boot – with his beguiling self-titled debut offering, Gurrumul is aiming to build on that success with his second album Rrakala. The Australian performs his songs in Yolngu (his native tongue) and his unmistakable voice is full of character and class. Highlights include the bewitching waltz ‘Mala Rrakala’ which perfectly suits his unusual high pitched vocals, and ‘Bayini’, a beautiful three minutes of drama and intrigue that boasts a powerful multi-layered chorus. In truth, most of Rrakala makes riveting listening. Highly recommended.
