Ozzy osbourne meets Fairport convention on eclectic and eccentric new record from Vancouver oddities
Vancouver-based metal/folk band Black Mountain seem to have tapped into something pretty special for their new album Wilderness Heart. Occupying an curious zone all of their very own, their blend of Ozzy-era Sabbath and British folk makes for a bewitching brew of sweet melodies and house-shaking riffs and the boy/girl vocals sound perfect together. In many ways, Wilderness Heart is the sound of a band pushing things to breaking point, and the quieter songs see the band at their most delicate (‘Radiant Hearts’), while the heavier tunes rock with the best of them (‘Old Fangs’). It looks like the third time really is the charm.
