Once Enda gave NASDAQ the thumbs up, it was back down to business at the Web Summit
Shortly after the Taoiseach had rang the opening bell for the NASDAQ exchange, Flipboard's Mike McCue and the Huffington Post's Jimmy Mayman were amongst a panel to discuss the future of online media.
The basics of what the tech gurus discussed were probably of little surprise to most; that social media is the perennially growing trend as things move away from traditional media; that mobile video is a huge and powerful factor; that the traditional values of relevance and speed are still important.
The devil, though, is in the detail, and some of the tips revealed were the sort to help any attendees to grow their online presence.
Moving into a network of people, Mayman reasoned, meant that content no longer had to be merely interesting to the individual consumer, but a conversation starter that someone will want to share. McCue - whose Flipboard app works in aggregating and customising news content - pointed out that in an age of information overload, content has to be personalised in order to reach a particular target audience.
With strains of McLuhan’s ‘the medium is the message’ the panel agreed that in the same way a GoPro video makes you want to have a GoPro, your content will have to energise consumers and capture imaginations to the same degree. They also pointed towards Vogue magazine as leading the way in their approach towards advertising themselves.
It’s already been an action packed day at the RDS, and there’ll be a lot more before the event is out. Keep checking back for more photos, action and reaction right here at [link]hotpress.com[/link].
