Live From The Royal Albert Hall

Las Vegas legends weigh in with stopgap live album

Edwin McFee, 30 Nov 2009

Three albums in (plus one odds ‘n’ sods record) and it’s live album time for Las Vegas legends The Killers. Recorded at London’s Royal Albert Hall this summer (hey – where else would a bunch of Anglophiles document one of their performances?), the release is a surprisingly solid representation of one of their gigs. Not exactly renowned for their charismatic performances, The Killers’ true ace up their sleeves is their impressive array of hits.

All your favourites get an outing, including the still bizarre ‘Human,’ the self-hating ‘Mr Brightside’ and the life-affirming classic ‘Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine’ – it’s a timely reminder of just how good the five-piece are at crafting an intelligent synth laden pop song.

Ultimately though, Live At The Royal Albert Hall is merely a release intended for the Christmas market and it fills a gap as The Killers work out their next move. While fans will love it, it’s by no means essential listening and in the great live album stakes won’t give the likes of Live After Death or Live And Dangerous a run for their money.
