FORMER KENICKIE MEMBER GETS FOLKED UP
In an age where we are utterly bombarded by wave after wave of mediocre nu-folk, it’s comes as a pleasant surprise (and a slight relief, truth to be told) to find that the debut offering from Geordie four-piece The Cornshed Sisters is actually pretty good. Featuring Marie Nixon in their ranks (who elephant-minded readers will remember was the former guitarist and singer for the dearly departed ‘90s indie legends Kenickie), the record is hugely indebted to English folk and the vocal play on songs such as ‘Tommy’ is really quite special. Admittedly, some of the tracks can get a little samey and they don’t really add anything new to the genre that I can spot – but if you’re not charmed by ‘Dance At My Wedding,’ then you’ve clearly got a gaping hole in your chest where your heart should be.
