Following two years of silence, Spies have returned with a new single, the first song from a body of new material that will be released later this year. The song 'Young Dad' reveals quite a radical change in direction.
Since forming in 2009, the band released a series of critically acclaimed records via Dublin imprint Trout Records.
At home and in the UK, the band were hotly tipped. Renowned for their blistering live performances (as captured by Other Voices), the band had solidified their reputation as something special. However, following the release of their 'Sea Creature' EP and a tour with Wold Alice in 2016, they all but disappeared.
Frontman Michael Broderick explains the reason for this - "We felt in order to write something we were really proud of, we needed to distance ourselves from the outside pressures of being in a band.
"It's easy to get distracted by all the things you think you should be doing and overlook that your primary objective should be to write great music."
Taking a step back from playing live, the band built their own studio and filled it with a range of vintage synthesizers and drum machines. A new sonic palette was now open to them.
Spies play their first show in two years in the intimate setting of Whelans upstairs on 6 May.
