16 year-old Katie is destined to spend her life with coffee-stained fingerprints and a sea of crumpled paper covering her room. She routinely “drives everyone mad” by blasting The Last Shadow Puppets, while her parents scream their lungs raw, trying to get her attention. But at the end of it all, she believes that her dedication will amount to something. Her favourite writers are Tania Unsworth and Roald Dahl.
And now for Katie’s WRITE HERE, WRITE NOW entry ...
I Hold It In My Hand
I hold it in my hand;
the world.
it is right here, thriving within
the wires and memory cards
within each pixel and particle.
To me it is remarkable
how something intangible
both divides and unites us as a
nation.
Maybe not in the hazy heat rays
of the sun blazing down
on the head of a young woman
carrying a bucket of water.
And maybe not in the midst of rubble
and ruin, as a child sits cowering in
the corner of the remains of their home.
But without it in my hand
I may not know about such things.
It may be a tiny computer and I
may only be looking through a
window into the lives of these people,
but this knowledge would be
completely alien to me if I did
not have it.
I can read about tragedies and triumphs,
survivors and martyrs,
good and evil.
I hold the world in my hand,
and that is a miracle.
