Phil Udell, 13 Jul 2005

The sight of a list of remixes on a single is usually a guarantee of fairly dull times ahead yet, as with everything else she does, Maya Arulpragasm doesn't play by the rule. While the original is a jarring, if breathtaking garage two-stepper the remixers manage to smooth off some of the rough edges, particularly the DaVinChe version. None however can dim the spirit of the year's most vital new artist.

Safe Night

German DJ/producer M.I.A. hasn’t released a record in nearly two years, but ‘Safe Night’ makes up for lost time, its rubbery drums, dissected vocals and mournful bassline sounding like a voyeuristic flick through her diary.
