Kneecap film producer to screen new documentary at Galway Film Fleadh

The Negotiator, a documentary following the life of U.S. Senator George Mitchell and his part in the Northern Ireland peace process, will be screened at the Galway Film Fleadh on July 11.

The film was directed by journalist and filmmaker Trevor Birney, whose producing credits include BAFTA-winner Kneecap, Cyndi Lauper: Let the Canary Sing and the upcoming Irish football drama Saipan. Birney also directed RTÉ's Quinn Country, documenting the career of Irish billionaire Sean Quinn.

"We’re honoured that The Negotiator has been invited to screen at the 37th Galway Film Fleadh," Birney said. "This welcome is not only a recognition of the pressing issues explored in the film, but also of the enduring example offered by Senator Mitchell."

The Negotiator was developed by Fine Point Films — a company founded by Birney — in association with Queen’s University Belfast and premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in May. The film profiles Sen. Mitchell, the titular negotiator, who facilitated and mediated all-party talks which led to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.

Birney said the film aimed to raise questions regarding political negotiations and what it takes to achieve peace in conflicts.

“The Negotiator serves as both a tribute to Senator Mitchell’s extraordinary role in Northern Ireland and a timely reminder of what true diplomacy can achieve," Birney said.
