Grainne Diver of the Screaming Orphans tells Stuart Clark about their new single
THE SCREAMING ORPHANS demonstrate that there’s life after Warners with the release this week of ‘Thank You’.
Although their debut single, ‘Little Road’, went top 20 here last year, the UK side of the company deemed the marketing of an all-girl rock act to be "too difficult".
"The problems arose when WEA – as it was then – was taken over by London Records, and the person who signed us and the Head of Promotions both left in quick succession," reveals Grainne Diver. "When we asked them about releasing the album they said, ‘maybe in six months time’, which was no good to us. In the end, it was a relief to be let go."
It’s not all gloom, doom and despondency, though, with the Bundoran sister act being handed back their Listen & Learn album. The opus was produced by Manic Street Preachers, Travis and Texas man Mike Hedges, who likes it so much he’s decided to put it out on his own 3kHz label.

"I can’t praise Mike too highly," Diver continues. "Not only did he bring the best out of us in the studio, but he’s now pushing the album as hard as he can. We’re also negotiating a couple of sponsorship deals, and preparing for a trip to America in September which should result in something big."
You can see the Orphans do their live thing on June 25th when they visit Whelan’s.
