Suffering from what has been described as a major heart condition, Ginger Baker of Cream has undergone open heart surgery.
A legendary drummer, Baker played with Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton in the acclaimed power trio, establishing his reputation as one of rock's finest sticks-men. He also made three acclaimed albums with Fela Kuti. Rolling Stone ranked the 76-year-old third on its list of the "100 Greatest Drummers of All Time" this year, behind only John Bonham and Keith Moon.
Baker's daughter has described him as being "on the road to recovery." She reported that he had called her after the surgery. Though he sounded "rather disoriented and unintelligible", she said, her father was "awake and aware".
The drummer is also suffering from swollen legs, due to a serious fall earlier this year. fHe now plans to visit a doctor in relation to that ailment, once he has recovered.
Having been on tour before his health scare, Baker aims to return to live gigging, once he has recovered.
