According to reports, the television giant had it out with Warner Bros and Palmstar and eventually walked away with the rights for the meagre sum of $90 million.
What could be worth such an amount? Apparently Will Smith's cop thriller Bright.
According to Deadline, the deal was closed over the weekend and Netflix will pay up $45 million to shoot the feature along with $3 million for the prised script. The film will see the reunion of Smith and director David Ayer who worked together in the summer blockbuster-to-be Suicide Squad. It's also set to star Joel Edgerton.
Relatively little is yet known about the premise of the film but it will be set in L.A and will revolve around a world inhabited by fairies, orcs and humans, centering on a particular cop orc. This original concept and script is courtesy of Max Landis.
This figure dwarfs all other investments made by Netflix and could see them transition into the mainstream theatrical release. It's believed that there may be a limited theatrical release for Bright but it will then be taken out of public screens and made exclusive only to Netflix subscribers. This deal sees the growing power and domination Netflix has established in the broadcasting and production medium since its streaming origins in 2007.
Bright is due to start filming later this year.
