The one you were waiting for.
The big one, as they say, was upon us last night. The 86 academy Awards, hosted by none other than America’s favourite talk show host Ellen Degeneres.
The big stories of the night were predictably Gravity and 12 Years A Slave with most of the big awards going to them. Gravity won seven, including Best Director and 12 Years A Slave picked up Best Picture, prompting Rolling Stone to accidentally call British director Steve Mcqueen African- American.
The other big awards were Best Actor which went to Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Cub, and Best Actress which went to Cate Blanchett for her role in Blue Jasmine
There was significant Irish interest at the awards, but sadly only nominations for Philomena, which was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress and others, whilst U2 got a Best Song nod for their Long Walk To Freedom track ‘Ordinary Love’ which of course came with an acoustic performance from the foursome. Best Song went to Frozen's 'Let It Go'
Other musical performances on the night included Pink, Bette Midler (I know.) and Idina Menzel (who John Travolta called Adele Dazeem. We’ve all been there.)
Hot Press Interviewee Jared Leto came back to acting with aplomb as he picked up an award for Best Supporting Actor for Dallas Buyers Club, you can read our interview with him about the film here

Overall, a very safe awards show, probably just as well after Seth Mcfarlane had his shot.

See you all again next year.
