There’s an extra reason for celebrating Record Store Day with HMV returning to Grafton Street on Saturday April 19.
The store opens at 8am with exclusive offers throughout the store including a whopping 40% off all vinyl. Other one-day only deals include Blu-ray players for €9.99 and €100 off Xbox One and PS4 consoles.
There will also be live music and sets from Hermitage Green, We Cut Corners, Seo Linn, The Riptide Movement, Ministry of Sound man Shane Kehoe and DJ Francois.
The opening of Grafton Street brings the total number of HMV stores in Ireland to eight, with a ninth opening shortly in Galway’s Edward Square. There are also 46 dual-branded Xtra-vision and HMV stores around the country, with a further six on the way.
The Record Store Celebration Day 40% off vinyl applies to all HMV stores in Ireland, excluding their Newry outlet.
As for Record Store Day itself, some of the goodies that may or may not be hitting shelves here – it’s always an imprecise science! – include David Bowie ‘Rock ’N’ Roll Suicide’ picture-disc, Nirvana ‘Pennyroyal Tea’, Damon Albarn ‘Hollow Ponds’/‘Lonely Press Play’, Elbow ‘Charge’, Paul Weller ‘Brand New Toy’/‘Landslide’ 7”s; Jake Bugg’s Live At Silver Platters EP; an 18-track Demolicious collection from Green Day, and REM’s 4x12” Unplugged box-set.
There will also be a vinyl run of the Pixies’ first full studio album since 1991, Indy Cindy; a cool blue transparent blue version of The Beach Boys’ Surfin’ Safari; a 10 x 10” vinyl Creedence Clearwater: The 69 singles package and a 5x12” Live The Final Show – NY from LCD Soundsystem.
Irish acts getting involved include James Vincent McMorrow whose ‘Cavalier’ 10” finds him being remixed by The 1975 and Dptat; Kodaline who are releasing new song ‘Coming Up’ on white 7”; The Pogues who give a stand alone vinyl release to Live In London With Joe Strummer; Villagers who are putting ‘Occupy Your Mind’ out on 7” and The Strypes who are unleashing their 4 Track Mind vinyl EP.
That, though, is the merest tip of the iceberg with over 500 releases listed on recordstoreday.co.uk
