Dublin Star Wars fans turn out in huge numbers to sold old midnight screenings of the latest episode in the epic sci-fi franchise.
Walking into the IMC in Santry at 11.40 last night, one could be excused for thinking they'd gotten the time wrong.
The foyer was packed with people of all ages, so it seemed more like walking into a busy city centre cinema at peak time on a Friday evening. And why, pray tell, the commotion? Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the latest episode in the epic sci-fi franchise - that's why.
There was a buzz about the cinema, many fans not knowing exactly what to expect. Ever since Disney bought Lucas Film and announced at least three new episodes, they have been tightlipped about what way they would take the franchise. Announcing a new director to take the mantle from George Lucas didn't exactly surprise many fans but the appointment of JJ Abrams stunned everyone with an interest, and all for one reason - he directed the most recent Star Trek film.
Note: To many this may not seem such an issue but to both Star Wars and Star Trek fans this is biiiiig.
Looking at the queue for the concession stand it was surprising to see the varying ages in attendance. One father was there with his 11 year old son and 14 year old daughter - though we might dare suggest they were merely excuse for him to attend the midnight screening. A large portion of those in attendance had seen all six in the cinema, one man trying to recall at which exact spot he caught A New Hope in back in 1977. "Maybe it was Curzon on the North Quays?"
For all of that, though - and to my surprise - many attending the midnight screening would barely even remember the last three instalments, let alone the original three. Nonetheless, it was these fans that seemed to anticipate the new episode more than anyone else in attendance.

As the cinema filled up and 12.05 struck fans were getting anxious to get things started, queues relentless as staff tried to seat everyone in time. At 12.15 when everyone was seated in the correct row, the first cheer of the night rose as the curtains opened and the trailer for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice started.
Three trailers - and a very long demonstration of how good the sound system was - later, the film classification appears on the screen. "12A Star Wars: The Force Awakens and another huge cheer, quickly hushed by many of the fans as it faded to the opening credits.
Throughout the two hours and 16 minutes there were numerous other cheers, as the 200 strong crowd clearly enjoyed every moment of JJ Abram's offering.
Walking out, much of the talk was very positive, some fans even suggesting that they will go see it in 3D now. Most were in high spirits, feeling very positive about the direction that Abrams is going to take the franchise - the only problem being the two year wait until the next episode...
