The critically acclaimed television and pop star has been undergoing chemotherapy to treat the disease
The talented former Disney star, Selena Gomez, revealed yesterday that she has been diagnosed with lupus. The announcement accompanied the sneak peek of her feature on the cover of Billboard magazine.
The pop star explained that while many gossip blogs attributed her leave of absence to an addiction battle, it was really because she was undergoing chemotherapy in order to treat the lupus disease.
Lupus is an autoimmune inflammatory disorder, which could potentially be fatal if not treated. When someone is infected with lupus, it causes your own immune system to attack your tissues and organs, which could affect many different systems of the body.
“I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke,” explained Gomez to Billboard. “I wanted so badly to say, ‘you guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.’ I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”
Gomez's new album, Revival, will be released tomorrow on October 9.
