Sadly, it’s not all good news from The People’s Republic. Shortly before the county’s hurlers engaged in their titanic winning battle with Dublin at Croker, the shop where Rory Gallagher famously bought his 1961 Fender Strat announced that it was closing.
“After 87 years of trading as Crowley’s Music Centre we unfortunately closed our doors for good at 6pm this evening,” we were informed on Saturday. “Despite our best efforts and with everyone’s goodwill we are unable to continue. Obviously we love this place like our home and it will be missed.”
Ken Marshall spoke for the local music community when he said, “So sad to hear this. Bought my first clarinet and sax there. My dad bought all his guitars and equipment there. A real Cork institution, you will be sorely missed. Thanks Sheena and the staff for all your help down the years.”
Adds another regular Ray Murphy: “It’s a sad day for Cork musicians and Cork business in general. Crowley’s has been a leading retailer for so many years, the news saddens me on both a personal and professional level.”
