Irish Nobel Laureate William C. Campbell calls for a repeal of the 8th amendment

A remarkable 1,200 Irish scientists have signed a letter calling for the Repeal of the 8th Amendment to the constitution – including many of our most eminent academics.

Ireland’s science community has united in calling for the 8th amendment to the constitution to be repealed.

In a development which underlines the rational basis for the Repeal campaign, Scientists for Yes have collected over 1,200 signatories to a letter from scientists, based in 21 research organisations, right across the country.

Dr. William C. Campbell – Ireland’s only living Nobel Laureate for the sciences – is amongst the many high-profile Irish scientists included in the signatories. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2015, for his work in curing river blindness.

Also amongst the high-profile signatories are Luke O’Neill (TCD); Aoife McLysaght (TCD); Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin (UCD); Orla Hardiman (TCD); Louise Kenny (UCC), Shane Bergin (UCD) and Tomás Ryan (TCD).

Commenting today, Dr. Tomás Ryan, Assistant Professor of Neuroscience, Trinity College Dublin and spokesperson for Scientists for Yes said: “As scientists, we value evidence-based, rational decision making. Based on our assessment of the social and scientific evidence, and guided by our own individual private values, each of the 1,200 of us has arrived at slightly different, personal positions, that all call for a repeal of the 8th amendment.

“We commend the Citizens’ Assembly and the Joint Oireachtas Committee, whose members examined all of the legal, medical, and scientific evidence and listened to many personal testimonies, before delivering their respective reports,” he added.

“Both groups overwhelmingly and independently came to the same result; that the only reasonable and compassionate place for women’s reproductive healthcare is inside of a doctor’s surgery and outside of our constitution.

“For anyone who is undecided on how to vote next week, we encourage them to undergo a critical assessment of all of the social, legal, medical, and scientific evidence available, and of the sources of claims made, before deciding how they wish to vote on May 25th.”

"This is an overwhelming endorsement of the need to remove the 8th Amendment from the constitution," Hot Press editor Niall Stokes said in response to the news. "One of the things that I have tried to emphasise, writing about this issue in Hot Press, is that good people will put reason, genorosity to their fellow citizens and kindness to women ahead of ideology, negativity and control. In many ways, the most imporant element of this is kindness. But the foundation of the Yes view is the commitment to reason above obscurantism – and this has been endorsed in a hugely positive way today by the Irish scientific community."

Here is the full text of the letter – and the full list of signatories.

We, the 1,200 undersigned individuals, write as a group of professional scientists and members of Ireland’s scientific community, but primarily as citizens or residents of Ireland, in support of the proposed repeal of the 8th amendment. We are committed to making our contribution to an evidence-based, rational, innovation-led society and we advocate that people undertake a careful examination of the legal, medical, and scientific evidence, including a critical assessment of the sources and probable veracity of any claims made, before deciding how they wish to vote. We value the process of coming to an evidence-based decision. This process critiques the diverse range of evidence presented, where an open mind is balanced by a healthy degree of scepticism. In this regard we commend the Citizens’ Assembly and the Joint Oireachtas Committee, who undertook careful evidence-gathering exercises before delivering their reports. We commend also the politicians and members of civic society, who have honestly and openly acknowledged how they were compelled by the evidence and the personal testimony of many brave individuals to support a yes vote. The 8th amendment was inserted on a wave of negative emotions; let it be washed away by a flood of reason, evidence and compassion.

Yours etc,
