The displaying of large images - purporting to show foetuses before abortion – is a new low in the ongoing referendum campaign, a Fine Gael TD has said.
Fine Gael TD for Dublin North West, Noel Rock has said the images have been placed outside entrances to some of Dublin’s busy maternity hospitals this week for a short period of time before they are moved to a new location.
The images are on clear display for patients, staff and visitors to see, he says.
“It’s shameful to be upsetting people who are already going through a very personal and sensitive situation," he explained.
“Patients at a maternity hospital can have a variety of personal issues and do not need to be canvassed by these images at the main entrance to hospitals,” Deputy Rock, who supports repealing the eight amendment, said.
“Every day, unfortunately, women suffer miscarriages across the country or can be suffering complications in treatment.
“It’s absolutely shameful that they and their families are now expected to pass these high definition photos at what would be a difficult time for anybody.
“This is a new low for this campaign and I would call on those who are carrying it out to leave our hospitals and patients alone. It is grossly and highly insensitive,” Deputy Rock said.
