Lisa Hannigan is among the musicianly admirers paying tribute to JJ Cale who died yesterday after suffering a heart attack in California.
“Rest in Peace JJ,” Lisa says. “‘Magnolia’ is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.”
“Just heard that JJ Cale died,” adds Dublin songwriter Cian Nugent. “God, really sad, one of the true greats.”
Elsewhere, New York chanteuse Nicole Atkins proffers: “He was the master of cool. Taught me at an early age that traveling light was the only way to fly. RIP sweet baby”; the Wichita Records crew tweet: “So sad about JJ Cale. Such an honour to go to his home last year and hear some amazing stories. RIP, sir, you were a true great”; Irish author Michael Clifford weighs in with “JJ Cale's guitar falls silent. His great work lives on” and James Vincent McMorrow proffers a simple “RIP JJ Cale.”
The quintessential musicians’ musician – Neil Young noted recently that, "Of all the electric guitar players I ever heard, it's gotta be Hendrix and JJ Cale who are the best" – Cale was best-known for supplying Eric Clapton with his ‘Cocaine’ smash, but also enjoyed 40 years of chart success in his own right.
With word doubtless reaching Kilkenny, we’re wondering if there will be a Bruce and the E Street Band tribute to the great man tonight? You certainly wouldn’t bet against it…
