Hip-hop's most revered figure of 2015 – his To Pimp A Butterfly was awarded the Hot Press Critics Album Of The Year – has released another hugely compelling video...
Los Angeles rapper Kendrick Lamar has premiered a thought-provoking new music video, entitled 'God Is Gangsta'. The short film features two tracks, 'U' and 'For Sale', from his critically acclaimed album To Pimp A Butterfly.
In July, when the Compton native released the video for 'Alright', it was evident that Lamar’s visuals had finally caught up with his powerful written message. During the making of To Pimp A Butterfly, the rapper confessed to having suicidal thoughts. Themes of darkness and demons-on-the-loose are littered throughout what is a landmark album.
No more so, however, than during the first half of the film 'God Is Gangsta'. Here, Lamar tackles a topic that is close to his heart, that is, the effects of the abuse of alcohol. It's a subject he's previously written about, most notably on the song 'Swimming Pools'. In the video, the musician staggers around an oak-furnished room, sweating profusely, and constantly swigging from a beautifully decorated glass whiskey decanter.
The second half of the short sees Lamar meandering through a nightclub full of scantily-clad women. While he strolls through the club, subliminal messages flash up on the screen: “You’ll buy the mall if lust involved. The evils of it all” / “I followed your rules for way too long” / and “You played the game. I pimped it.”
As for what Kendrick has in store for 2016, what we know is that he is constantly writing. In an interview with The New York Times, he talked about the process of creating his next album. “I’m just writing, writing, writing,” he said. "I keep these tablets on me until I’m inspired to go back in and make the music. I never take a break from my pen, because I pride myself on that.

"As far as a break from music, yeah, I can’t just go in and force myself,” he stated. "I have to come from an original and organic place. It can come tomorrow; it can come two years from now.”
