Continuing his mantle-troubling run of awards, Hozier collected the Newcomer of the Year prize at last night's European Festival Awards.

Decided by a combination of public vote and industry juries, the awards – established in 2009 - were presented at a sold-out ceremony in De Oosterpoort that took place yesterday on the opening night of Eurosonic Noorderslag. The internationally feted Bray singer-songwriter wasn’t there in person to pick up his gong.

This year’s awards broke all previous records with over 1.2 million votes, and more than 350 festivals taking part from 35 different European countries.
