Mere hours before he hits the Croke Park stage, Gavin James takes the time to discuss nerves, naps and sharing bills with the biggest stars in music
When Gavin James heard about the Berkeley fundraising gig in The Academy last night, he headed straight for the show – bringing his Kodaline pals Mark and Steve along too. And while he was in typically storming form last night, it’s fair to say there was one eye on a slightly bigger show this weekend.
“I’m actually not all that nervous,” he grinned, as Hot Press grabbed a Guinness and pulled up a stool. “I was nervous a week ago, and the week before that, but I’m feeling good. Maybe ask me tomorrow though…”
To be fair, preparations could scarcely have been more perfect; he’s tuned up for Croke Park and Ed Sheeran by hitting the road in the US, supporting another British solo superstar, Sam Smith.
“We’ve only done three dates so far – I’m flying straight back out there on Sunday – but we covered Florida pretty well. It’s been great so far, the crowds have been amazing.” He laughs: “I write sad songs about relationships too, so myself and Sam are probably a good fit!”
Of course, the transatlantic journey can take it out of you, and with a special fan event in Whelan’s scheduled for Saturday afternoon, was the issue of jetlag not on his mind?
“Ah fuck it, I’ll be grand! I got home on Wednesday with time for a nap, so it’s all good.”
Roll on this evening!
