Detroit-based brothers Laurence and Lenny Burden keep the crowd on their toes throughout their flawless dance set on the Lighthouse Stage. Heads down, bobbing in sync with their driving beats and heavy bass, everybody’s hands are in the air at Octave One without the duo even having to ask.
The fairly young crowd swells as the set goes on. A friendly stranger dances towards me and high fives me before dancing back into the crowd; then he comes back to make sure I’ve written it down along with the rest of my notes.
Refreshingly, there’s no laptop to be seen among their heavy equipment – it makes a nice change from dance artists sitting on their computers during their sets. With slick transitions and lighting that syncs with the fast-paced beat, they clearly have no need for them. The beat drops, and so do the brothers’ heads as they dance in time with the music and the crowd. A polished and stirring performance.
