The former Disney star, who is celebrating six years of sobriety today,has started a fiery debate on Twitter amongst her followers after she lambasted the so-called "diet culture", telling her fans that "you are beautiful no matter what anyone says".
"It’s so frustrating and sad how strong the #dietculture in our society is,' said the 25-year-old.
"It’s constantly telling us we’re not thin enough no matter what. You are beautiful no matter what anyone says."
She also took to Twitter this morning to announce that she is now six years sober. Demi wrote: "Just officially turned 6 years sober. So grateful for another year of joy, health and happiness. It IS possible."

The tweet about "diet culture" was met with over 70,000 likes, 19,000 retweets and 2,000 comments. Demi also took to Twitter to share an article about eating disorders (see link).

Her own issues with food is something that Demi has discussed openly in the past. She once confessed in a YouTube video: "The less I have to think about food, the easier it is for me to go about having a normal life, and I don't wanna let anybody down, so when I do have moments that I slip up, I feel very ashamed."
She also once spoke frankly about purging, saying: "When I was in a relationship with Wilmer, I went three years without purging, and when we broke up, that's one of the first things I did."

She has described food as the "biggest challenge in my life", adding that it "controls" her. "I don't wanna give it the power to say that it controls my every thought, but it's something that I'm constantly thinking about," she said.
